WHAT IS DYSLEXIA?

The student who struggles with reading and spelling often puzzles teachers and parents. The student receives the same classroom instruction as other students, but continues to struggle with some or all of the many facets of reading and spelling. This student may have dyslexia.
The primary symptoms are :

  • Problems learning the letter sounds for reading and spelling
  • Difficulty in reading single words, such as on flash cards and in lists (decoding)
  • Lack of fluency
  • Reading slowly with many mistakes
  • Poor spelling
  • Poor visual gestalt / coding (orthographic coding)

Dyslexia is:

  • Highly hereditary.
  • A difference in the way the brain processes
  • Challenges in the development of phonological awareness

STRENGTHS OF DYSLEXIA

Research has indicated that we should be wary about automatically assuming that language processing difficulties/differences associated with dyslexia are deficits. Some of the differences that individuals with dyslexia display may actually confer advantages for some kinds of thinking or encourage them to find different paths to learning (Singleton)

The following are some of the strengths that individuals with dyslexia may display :

  • Inquiring mind
  • Problem Solving
  • Comprehending new ideas
  • Generating ideas
  • Analytic thinking
  • Creative thinking
  • 3-D construction
  • Finding different strategies
  • Seeing the big picture
  • Insightful thinking

DIFFICULTIES FACED BY DYSLEXIC/DYSLEXIA

  • Dyslexic children may be physically and socially immature in comparison to their peers. This can lead to poor self-image and less peer acceptance, also make them awkward in social situations.
  • It often affects oral language functioning. This puts them at a disadvantage as they enter teenage, when language becomes more central to their relationships with peers.
  • It causes the person to have depression, anxiety, anger and low self-confidence. 
  • They will have longer learning period. It puts barriers in the way of progress and dyslexia makes some things harder to learn. Usually, the most persistent difficulty is with spelling.

Some people think that all people with dyslexia are brilliant at Math because of Albert Einstein but unfortunately that is not so. People who having dyslexia is actually having a problem such as:

Can't understand the language of Math

  • Some students struggle to read and understand vocabulary in Math questions and therefore don't know what task that they are being asked to do. Many different words can be used to describe the same action. 

Trouble of memorizing things in Math

  • There are many facts, figures, tables and formulas which have to be learnt and recalled accurately but they can't remember all of them.

Orientation

  • Difficulties with orientation and direction can lead to confusion of Math symbols. Some people with dyslexia show weakness in the Coding subtest in the assessment meaning that they struggle to decode symbols accurately and quickly.

THE GOOD THING THAT WILL HAPPEN WITH SPECIALIZE TRAINING TO REMOVE THE DISABILITIES

Sharpen skills

  • It is a condition not a medical disease.
  • Even after the treatment, some dyslexics can purpose write how they use to and use them to their own advantage
  • Easily said, it is an added skill. 
  • Leonardo da Vinci calls it "Dyslexia the gift". He's able to write in reverse, mirror image. This trait is sometimes shared among left handed dyslexic adults.
  • dyslexics are more curious than average
  • they have a vivid imagination
  • with specialized training, they can create things creatively 
  • they can also be very talented in art 
  • sharpened skills can be good for their self esteem                        

Stop the society from underestimate the person who have a dyslexia

  • The person who get cured from the disabilities can improve themselves in their spelling or writing and can be socialized, communicate in their studies with the society like the common person
  • Can prevent or limit a serious cases from happen like having a problem to continue their studies to a higher level
  • They can be more independent and confident
